Our Philosphy

We at Twice Baked Barrel Horses believe that almost every horse that shows the athleticism and is sound can excel at being a barrel horse at some level. Often times horses are discarded or overlooked due to “quirks” or fixable soundness issues that can be overcome by:

Our main goal is to find horses that might be considered “diamonds in the rough”, or that have been rejected or discarded from either another discipline, or given up on by owners in the past; and turn their lives around! We want them to be successful “fully baked” little potatoes, ready to be sold and go on to be winning barrel horses.

Our name – Twice Baked Barrel Horses – is certainly a play on words. You can imagine what it might mean. It is partially a nod to Spud, the Flagship Horse that got us started on this journey. But mostly what it means, is that not every horse is good to go after their “first baking” aka their first career or shot at a job.

It is important to note that we do not disparage or disrespect the majority of sellers from whom we purchase our project and prospect horses. Just like the people we buy from, we do not have all the answers and we are not successful with every horse. The human-horse bond is delicate and involves a variety of factors, including, but not limited to: past trauma, confidence, sensitivity, medical issues, and affect or personality. All of these factors are true of BOTH the horse and the human – and it takes a lot of things to fall into place correctly and for the timing and stage of life of both parties to be right for a successful second bake.

We also do not believe that we can accomplish these goals without superior partners in the equine industry. That’s why when we reach the limits of our know-how and abilities, we look to other professionals we trust to fill in the gaps, and help us to help these horses be the best they can be.
